Beyond the chloride threshold concept for predicting corrosion of steel in concrete

All existing models to forecast the corrosion performance of reinforced concrete structures exposed chloride environments are based on one common theoretical concept, namely, a threshold, as sharply defined trigger for corrosion, followed by period active corrosion. We critically review resulting treatment initiation and propagation two distinct, successive stages. conclude that this concept presents major barrier developing reliable models, new approach is needed. In reality, steel in continuous process, is, rarely separable into uncoupled, sequential phases. propose focus be placed quantification time- space-variant rate from moment until it reaches end service life. To achieve this, multi-scale multi-disciplinary required combine scientific practical contributions materials science, cement/concrete research, structural engineering.
